Typically employed in systems involving the rotation of flat belts, timing belts, or chains, idler pulleys are strategically placed to apply tension to the belt and serve as tension adjusters, particularly in the operation of longer belts.
II. Functions and Characteristics of Idler Pulleys
Idler pulleys, as wheels that perform no mechanical work, possess a certain energy storage capacity, contributing to system stability. They aid in connecting distant shafts without altering the transmission ratio of the pulley system.
Primarily, idler pulleys function to adjust belt tension and facilitate auxiliary transmission.
When used for tensioning, they are generally positioned on the slack side to press against the belt, serving the purpose of unidirectional bending. It is advisable to place them closer to larger pulleys to minimize undue influence on the wrap angle of the smaller pulley. If the tensioning pulley is situated on the taut side, it should be placed as close as possible to the smaller pulley and have a diameter smaller than that of the smaller pulley.
